Chapel of the Apparitions
The official cameras of the Shrine of Fátima broadcast the Rosary every day from the Cova da Iria — the very place where, in 1917, Our Lady appeared six times to the three shepherd children.
1916 · 1917
A simple, urgent call — to pray, to convert, to trust in the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It all began with an Angel, a year before Our Lady came down to the Cova da Iria.
Before Our Lady, the Angel of Portugal appeared three times to the shepherd children — at the Loca do Cabeço and at the well behind Lúcia's home in Aljustrel — to prepare them. He taught them two prayers and gave them Holy Communion.
"Pray the Rosary every day, to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war." She asks them to return for six months in a row, on the 13th.
"My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God."
She entrusts the secret in three parts and promises the great miracle of October. She teaches the Fátima Prayer.
Delayed because the children had been detained on the 13th by the mayor of Ourém: "Pray, pray a great deal and make sacrifices for sinners."
"Continue to pray the Rosary to obtain the end of the war."
She asks for a chapel to be built. And the Miracle of the Sun takes place, seen by 50,000 to 70,000 people — reported even by the secular press.
Under the rain, the crowd saw the sun "dance" in the sky and plunge toward the earth. When it stopped, their soaked clothes were dry. It was the public confirmation Our Lady had promised, so that all would believe.
The Chapel of the Apparitions was raised in 1919 over the holm oak where she appeared — fulfilling the request of 13 October.

The three shepherd children
Three children from Aljustrel to whom Heaven entrusted a message for the whole world. Francisco and Jacinta were canonised at Fátima on 13 May 2017 — the first non-martyr children raised to the altars.
1907–2005. The only one who heard Our Lady. A Dorothean and later a Carmelite in Coimbra, she wrote the Memoirs that preserve the message. Venerable since 2023; she rests in the Basilica of the Rosary.
Cova da Iria, 1917
1908–1919. The contemplative — he saw but did not hear; he longed to "console the hidden Jesus" by the tabernacle. He died aged 10, of the great flu.
Canonised in 2017
1910–1920. The youngest. She offered sacrifices for the conversion of sinners and for the Holy Father. She died alone in Lisbon, aged 9, just as she had been told.

Where it all happened
The message has an address. Around the Cova da Iria, the fields, houses and hills where the shepherd children lived and prayed still stand open to those who wish to walk in their footsteps.
The small village where the three shepherds were born. You can visit Francisco and Jacinta's house and Lúcia's — now a house-museum — preserving rural life at the dawn of the 20th century.
At the well behind Lúcia's house in Aljustrel, the Angel appeared a second time, in the summer of 1916: "What are you doing? Pray, pray a great deal."
A rocky slope among olive trees where the Angel appeared the first and third times, giving the three Holy Communion. A sculptural group recalls the scene.
Since the children had been detained on the 13th, Our Lady appeared here on 19 August 1917. A monument marks the spot, on the shepherds' path.
An open-air path of prayer follows the children's steps up to Valinhos, with fourteen chapels — the stations of the Passion — and a fifteenth evoking the Resurrection. The chapels and the Hungarian Calvary, with its chapel of Saint Stephen of Hungary, were a gift from Hungarian Catholics exiled in the West after the Soviet invasion of their country.
The parish church of Fátima, dedicated to Our Lady of Delights, is where Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta were baptised and took their first steps in the faith. The baptismal font where the three became Christians is still there. A parish since 1568, it was enlarged to three naves in 1915 and renovated in 2000, the year of Francisco and Jacinta's beatification.
The Chapel of the Apparitions (1919) marks the exact spot of the holm oak; it has no doors, and the crown of the statue holds the bullet from the 1981 attempt. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary houses the tombs of the three shepherds. And the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity (2007), one of the largest churches in the world, welcomes the great pilgrimages.
Long before 1917, tradition tells that the Virgin appeared at the place of Ortiga to a shepherd girl mute from birth — who regained her speech — asking her for a little lamb. The title was born of the nettles (urtigas) that covered the site. The first chapel dates from 1758 and it is held to be the oldest Marian shrine in the region: a devotion that was already preparing the heart of Fátima.

O Jesus, it is for love of Thee, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
